Why Choose Tanzania for Trophy Hunting?

Tanzania is one of Africa’s best destinations for both plains game and dangerous game hunting.

Hunters can legally pursue lion, leopard, elephant, and Cape buffalo during a Tanzania hunting safari (rhino is strictly protected).

Hunting licenses include 10-day, 16-day, and 21-day options depending on species targeted.

Minimum safari length: 7 days (Allows up to two Cape buffalo + plains game)

A separate Dangerous Game permit is required when hunting Tanzania’s Big 5 species.

While Tanzania is not the cheapest hunting destination, it offers unmatched trophy quality and true wilderness hunting experiences.

Tanzania Plains Game Hunts

Tanzania has long been considered the crown jewel of African safari hunting, attracting hunters from around the world since Theodore Roosevelt’s legendary 1909 expedition. Today, it remains one of the most iconic destinations for Tanzania plains game hunts, offering unmatched wildlife numbers, vast free-range concessions, and over 50 huntable plains game species. No other country in Africa offers the same combination of wild, untouched landscapes and exceptional trophy quality—making hunting in Tanzania a lifelong dream for many.

Tanzania sits on the eastern coastline of Africa, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west; Zambia and Malawi to the southwest; and Mozambique to the south. Its Indian Ocean coastline and diverse terrain support a wildlife population and biodiversity unmatched anywhere else on the continent.

Top Plains Game Hunting Regions in Tanzania

Tanzania has three primary hunting regions, each offering a unique hunting experience:

one
Masailand (Northern Tanzania)

Known for its open plains, Maasai culture, and distinct species such as gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, and Patterson’s eland.

two
The Selous Game Reserve (Southern Tanzania)

Named after the legendary hunter Frederick Selous, this 19,000-square-mile wilderness is the largest game reserve in Africa. Known for huge buffalo herds, exceptional plains game, and world-class dangerous game.

three
Central & Western Tanzania

Remote, rugged, and home to rare species like Roosevelt sable, puku, and Lichtenstein hartebeest. These regions also hold strong buffalo and plains game numbers.
Across these regions lie more than 150 free-range hunting concessions, some exceeding two million acres. All hunting areas in Tanzania are wild—no high fences, no artificial game management—just authentic, true African bush.

Best Time for Tanzania Hunting Safari

Dry Season (June – October)

Best period for spotting and trophy quality. Temperatures: 13°C – 25°C

Short Dry Season (January – February)

Fewer hunters and good game viewing. Temperatures: 25°C – 35°C

Rainy Seasons (March–May & Nov–Dec)

Not ideal due to muddy terrain and limited access.

Tanzania Hunting Safari Camps & Travel

Most camps in Tanzania are luxury tented setups, built before the season and removed after it ends. Camps include ensuite safari tents, dining tents, chefs, trackers, skinners, and all staff needed for a professional safari experience.

Selous, western, and central Tanzania concessions are fly-in camps, typically requiring a 1–3 hour charter from Dar es Salaam.

The Tanzania hunting season runs July 1 to December 31.

TRAVEL & HUNTING INSURANCE RECOMMENDATION

Comprehensive Insurance Is Strongly Recommended

For your Tanzania Trophy Hunting Safari, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel and hunting insurance before departure.

Because hunting takes place in remote wilderness areas, your insurance should provide adequate protection for medical emergencies, evacuation, personal belongings, accidental injury and cancellation of your safari.

Your insurance should include:

1. Accidental Death & Permanent Disability
Coverage for accidental death, permanent disability or serious injury resulting from an insured accident during the trip.

2. Emergency Medical & Major Medical Expenses
Coverage for emergency treatment, hospitalization, doctors, medication and other medically necessary expenses while travelling in Tanzania.

3. Emergency Medical Evacuation & Repatriation
This is particularly important for a remote hunting safari. The policy should cover emergency evacuation from the hunting area to an appropriate medical facility and, when medically necessary, repatriation to your home country. Remote Tanzania locations can require expensive air evacuation, so check the policy limit carefully.

4. Loss, Theft or Damage of Personal Effects
Coverage for luggage, clothing, personal equipment and other belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the journey.

Hunters should also check whether the policy provides appropriate coverage for rifles, ammunition, hunting equipment, cameras and other high-value equipment, as standard baggage limits may be insufficient.

5. Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption
Coverage for eligible cancellation or interruption costs if you are unable to travel or must terminate your safari early because of a covered event, such as serious illness, injury or certain family emergencies.

When selecting a policy, make sure the cancellation limit is sufficient to cover the non-refundable portion of your hunting safari, flights and other prepaid travel arrangements.

IMPORTANT FOR HUNTERS

Before purchasing insurance, we recommend confirming in writing with the insurance company that the policy covers:

  • Tanzania
  • Trophy hunting
  • Guided hunting activities
  • Rifle hunting
  • Accidental injuries while hunting
  • Emergency medical evacuation from remote hunting areas
  • Air evacuation
  • Hospital treatment
  • Medical repatriation
  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Loss or damage of personal belongings
  • Hunting equipment, where applicable

Do not assume that a standard travel insurance policy automatically covers hunting.

Some policies exclude adventure activities or specific sporting activities, so hunters should disclose the nature of the trip and obtain confirmation that the planned hunting activities are covered.

INSURANCE CHECKLIST BEFORE DEPARTURE

Please confirm that your policy provides:

  • Accidental Death & Permanent Disability

  • Major Medical Expenses

  • Emergency Medical Evacuation

  • Air Ambulance / Remote Area Evacuation

  • Medical Repatriation

  • Trip Cancellation

  • Trip Interruption

  • Loss, Theft & Damage of Personal Effects

  • Hunting Activity Coverage

  • Firearm/Hunting Equipment Coverage, if applicable

  • Coverage for Tanzania

  • 24-hour emergency assistance

Important

The insurance policy should be purchased before travelling to Tanzania. Keep your insurance policy number, emergency telephone number and assistance details with you throughout the safari.

Insurance requirements and exclusions vary by country and insurer. Always read the full policy wording and confirm coverage directly with your insurer before purchasing.

Insurance is not included in the hunting safari package price unless specifically stated in your quotation.
